The Expedition faces stiff competition against the Tahoe, but which SUV has more muscle?

The full-size SUV market is a competitive segment, and two of the most distinguished large SUVs on the road are the 2023 Ford Expedition and the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe. Both vehicles are capable, convenient, and provide ample space for passengers and cargo, but there are some significant differences between the two that you should consider before buying your next SUV for 2023.

Engine and Performance

The 2023 Ford Expedition is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and impressive acceleration. The Expedition also comes with standard rear-wheel drive, but buyers can opt for the four-wheel drive for improved off-road capabilities.

On the other hand, the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe comes with a choice of two engines. The standard engine is a 5.3-liter V8 that produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can upgrade to a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, but the Tahoe only comes with rear-wheel drive as standard. Four-wheel drive is available as an option.

The Expedition offers a slightly better fuel efficiency, with 17 city and 24 highway mpg for the 4×2 model and 16 city and 22 highway mpg for the 4×4 model. Meanwhile, the 2023 Tahoe falls slightly behind with 15 city and 20 highway mpg for the 4×2 model and 14 city and 19 highway mpg for the 4×4 model.

Interior and Convenience

The 2023 Ford Expedition boasts a spacious and luxurious interior with plenty of room for up to eight passengers. It comes standard with a second-row bench seat, but buyers can opt for captain’s chairs for added comfort. The Expedition also has a generous amount of cargo space, with up to 104.6 cubic feet available with the rear seats folded down.

However, the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe is roomier with a cargo volume to the seat of 122.9 cu. ft. vs the 104.6 cu. ft. of the Expedition. It also offers more legroom and headroom for passengers. The Tahoe can seat up to 8 passengers, but its third-row seat is best suited for children or small adults.

Safety and Security

Both the 2023 Ford Expedition and the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe come with a host of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. The Expedition also comes with standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which are only available as options on the Tahoe.

Additionally, the Expedition earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, while the Tahoe received a four-star overall safety rating.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2023 Ford Expedition and the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe both come with impressive infotainment systems that offer a variety of features and connectivity options. The Expedition comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen display, while the Tahoe comes with a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen display.

Both systems support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the Tahoe’s system also comes with wireless phone charging and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The Expedition, however, offers a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system as an option, which is not available on the Tahoe.

Which SUV Should You Buy?

While the 2023 Chevy Tahoe is a compelling option with its larger infotainment display and more spacious cabin, the 2023 Ford Expedition still edges the Tahoe in so many ways. Its V6 engine delivers more power and torque than the Tahoe’s standard V8, and its optional four-wheel drive system makes it better suited for off-road adventures. The Ford Expedition also requires fewer stops at the pump, saving you time and money.
