Engine and Performance

The outgoing 2022 Ford Ranger and the new 2023 Ranger are powered by the same but more robust 2.3L EcoBoost® engine that churns out a solid 270 hp and 310 lb.-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a standard 10-speed Automatic Transmission in an RWD system. On the other hand, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma includes a 159-horsepower 2.7-liter four-cylinder and available 278-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine.

You can haul heavier equipment with the Ford Ranger with its impressive towing capacity of up to 7,500 lbs compared to the 6,500 lbs maximum towing capacity of the Toyota Tacoma.

Interior and Convenience

Both the 2022 Ranger and 2022 Tacoma offer a stylish, modern interior filled with pleasant materials. Each truck provides a comfortable ride with straightforward amenities and features. Both vehicles offer a decent cabin space for passengers but the Ranger offers a bit more legroom than the Tacoma.

Safety and Security

Both the 2022 Ranger XL and the 2022 Tacoma SR have standard driver and passenger safety and security features including frontal, front side-, and side-impact head airbags, brake assist, electronic stability control, daytime running lights, and traction control. Blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and other smart driver-assist features are available in other styles.

While both trucks have advanced safety technology to keep you from harm’s way, the 2022 Ranger has better safety ratings than the 2022 Tacoma.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The 2022 Ford Ranger features an 8-inch touch screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, six- and 10-speaker stereos, three additional USB ports, remote keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and ambient interior lighting.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has a 7-in. touchscreen, six speakers, Android Auto™  & Apple CarPlay® & Amazon Alexa integration, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, Dual-zone automatic climate control, hands-free phone capability and music streaming via Bluetooth®, and SiriusXM® 3-month trial subscription.

Trim Levels

Both trucks offer excellent options for every driver. The 2022 Ford Ranger is offered in four trim levels: the XL, XLT, and Lariat. To suit your lifestyle, Ford offers several packages to choose from such as the Tremor® Off-Road Package which includes skid plates, FOX® shocks, and a modified heavy-duty suspension for increased ground clearance.

On the other hand, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma can be tailored to fit driver needs with five trim levels to choose from – SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited.

Our Recommendation

The 2022 Ford Ranger definitely has some edge over the 2022 Toyota Tacoma. It offers a more powerful engine, higher trailering capacity, better fuel economy, and higher safety ratings.

However, this is not to say that the Tacoma is a poor option as the Tacoma gets a better Edmunds rating on driving, comfort, and utility.  The TRD off-road package is impressive too.

It all boils down to your preference, priorities, and budget. You may want to shop around to find the truck that feels right for you.
